Selena Gomez's song Kill em with Kindness has a line that I thought might be related to the Preludes. 

"Your lies are bullets, your mouth's a gun

No war and anger was ever won

Kill 'em, kill 'em, kill 'em with kindness".

This shows the idea that the husband used dishonesty to cover up the terrible evil he had committed, and that he used his mouth like a weapon to spew the lies he told Nenita. Because Nenita recognized the sins her husband had committed on a deep level and was neither angry nor in love with him, wars and conflicts caused by anger were never successful. So, to make her plan work, she poisoned her husband while she was caring for him by pretending that she was nursing him. That concludes my review of the song lyrics' possible relation to the novel Preludes.
